Who can duo with who in ranked
Below Diamond, you can duo with anyone inside about one tier of you, so a Gold player and a Platinum player are fine and a Gold player and a Diamond player are not. The rule gets stricter the higher you go, and above Master it stops existing entirely.
That is the shape of it. The exact bands matter if you are the pair that falls on a boundary, so here they are, along with the one that changed this summer and catches people out.

The Diamond row is the one that surprises people. Diamond is not one pool. A Diamond IV player and a Diamond I player both have "Diamond" on the profile and still cannot queue together, because the bands inside the tier are narrower than the tier.
Two regional differences worth knowing if you play there: Korea keeps the apex tiers solo only, and China allows duo up to Master.
What changed on 29 July 2026
Duo queue at the top has moved twice this year. It was pulled from Master and above around patch 26.9 during the apex ranked reset, then reopened in patch 26.15 on 29 July with a limit: Master players can duo, but only with players close to them in rank, and Grandmaster, Challenger and anyone carrying Grandmaster or Challenger MMR cannot duo at all.
The MMR clause is the part people miss. You can be sitting in Master on the profile and still be blocked, because the restriction reads your hidden rating rather than the badge. If you climbed hard and the ladder has not caught up with you yet, that is why the queue button is refusing.
The client is the authority
Riot changes these bands, they differ by region, and any table on the internet including this one is a snapshot. The party screen knows the current rule and will tell you before it lets you queue, which makes it worth thirty seconds: invite, look at the warning, believe it over anything you read.

Flex is a different queue with different rules
Flex takes one, two, three or five players, not four, and it has its own rank that has nothing to do with your solo rank. If the restriction is the problem and the rank is not the point, flex is usually the answer, and the two of you can bring the rest of the group.
The catch is that flex MMR starts from its own place, so a pair who queue flex to dodge a duo restriction will spend the first several games in lobbies that look nothing like their solo games.
What a duo actually changes about the game you get
Two things, and neither is the one people assume.
The matchmaker knows. A duo is treated as a unit, and the system accounts for the coordination it assumes you have. You are not getting a free advantage just by being in a call.
Bot lane duos change the lane, not the game. Two players who talk get more out of level 2 all-ins and dive setups than two strangers do, and the effect mostly shows up in the first ten minutes. A jungle and lane duo has a bigger effect than a bot lane duo, because it decides where the jungler goes rather than just how a lane trades.
What it does not do is fix the other three players, which is the thing everyone hopes for when they invite a friend.
The reverse question
If you are asking this because the enemy bot lane looked coordinated, that is the other question: whether they are the duo. You cannot check that during champion select, since names are hidden there and are not coming back, so it has to wait until the game starts.
LaneDiff does that check once the match is live: it looks for players in the lobby who have recent games together and says so. To be precise about what that proves, it is evidence that two people have been playing together lately, not proof that they are queued together right now. In practice those are usually the same people.
